1:10HostMost points amongst all cars. Welcome and good evening. The CEO fontes life, elon musk.
1:23HostGood evening. It's a pleasure having you.
1:58HostCome over. Good evening, Mr. Musk, it's great to have you here. Robin will first tell us what the jewelry thought about the wonderful Tesla.
2:07Jury MemberYeah, thank you. So The TEFLA Model 3 maybe is the biggest surprise in our test field. The jury thinks The Tesla Model 3 is cool. But of course you get no points for just being cool.
2:24Jury MemberYou do so therefore The Tesla Model 3 scores for agility, for the equipment and for its low cost of ownership. And as you already said, overall The Tesla Model 3 collects more points than any other finalist.
2:41Jury MemberSo congratulations.
2:43HostNo wonder for you.
2:48Elon MuskWell, thank you for this award. On behalf of the people of Tesla who worked really hard to make the Model 3. Thank you for this award.
2:56Jury MemberGreat.
2:58Elon MuskAnd I actually have an announcement which I think we hopefully well received, that we've decided to put the Tesla Gigafactory Europe in the Berlin area.
3:12HostThat's news.
3:14Elon MuskThat's news.
3:14HostSo you come up with this news tonight. This is wonderful. Yeah. Great. So we'll see you more often here in Berlin.
3:21Elon MuskYeah, I kind of learn a lot.
3:22HostWill you come then by the slow old fashioned plane or by hyperloop?
3:26Elon MuskI love Berlin.
3:27HostYeah, yeah. When will you come by hyperloop?
3:32Elon MuskI mean this might happen. Might come by rocket.
3:39HostYou know, you were here I think in 2014, achieving the golden steering wheel for lifetime achievement. Then you came back for Model X and you promised to come back when Model 3 is going to have an award.
3:52HostWhat will you promise this time?
3:54Elon MuskI mean if you. I give in, you know, I mean, here's the irony. In the future there may not be a steering wheel.
4:02HostYeah, yeah, yeah, we talked about that already. Yeah. What will that be?
4:07Elon MuskI don't know.
4:08HostTell us what, I mean we have to design it. Tell us, what's your vision?
4:13Elon MuskI don't know, like a hologram or something.
4:16HostHologram, okay.
4:17Elon MuskYeah, like the AI that's driving the car.
4:21HostOkay, yeah, we try to visualize that. Yeah.
4:23Elon MuskThrow in a hologram.
4:24HostWonderful. It's great to have you here and a good chance also to talk with you a little bit more.
4:43HostThere's a little chit chat, talk with the boy.
4:48ModeratorAll right here in the middle. So you know each other very well. We know. And you meet each other sometimes in California, I think. What are you doing when you meet you both?
5:03ModeratorTelling stories about electro mobility, driving cars, testing, drinking.
5:10Jury MemberWhat Are you doing all those things?
5:12Elon MuskI mean, of course we party like rock stars. It's crazy.
5:19Elon MuskWe talk about cars, you know, and the future. Cars.
5:22ModeratorYeah. Herbert is pushing the Volkswagen Group into electromobility very, very hard. And the IDG3 is not here this year. Maybe next year. Are you inspired by Elon or is there no alternative for this new engine?
5:42Herbert Diess (VW)Yeah, first of all, I really, I wanted to congratulate you. Great achievement. Now with all this competition here in Germany, winning this award, I think it's a great achievement.
5:53Herbert Diess (VW)We know each other, we don't meet so often. We know each other since a few years. And I would say that we share a vision which is that we only can achieve the CO2 targets and reduce carbon emissions through electric cars.
6:11Herbert Diess (VW)And we also share a vision that the car becomes really an Internet device. Always connected, always online. The car becomes really, really safe and totally environmentally friendly. And from time to time, yes, we meet because I think it's nice to follow up.
6:28Herbert Diess (VW)I have to say I really, I thank you for pioneering, for pulling us, for pushing us. I think Elon is really the innovator which is driving us along. And so it's worthwhile to talk about batteries, the right concepts.
6:45Herbert Diess (VW)And I always enjoy talking to him because he's really very visionary.
6:50ModeratorOkay, but what's the main problem, Elon, in Germany, with the E mobility and in Europe, why is in Germany? So why we are so far behind? 10 years, maybe 8 years, 5 years?
7:05ModeratorWhat do you say?
7:06Elon MuskWell, first of all, I don't think Germany is that far behind, you know, the. But I think it's always difficult when, you know, there's a lot of momentum around an old technology.
7:21Elon MuskThere's a lot of infrastructure, a lot of capital and that kind of thing that's tied up in the older technology. And when this, when you have a new technology, the market is unproven.
7:34Elon MuskSo then you say like, okay, does it really make sense to place a bet on this technology that's unproven? You know, when we started out at Tesla, everyone thought we were huge fools.
7:43Elon MuskI thought we were fools too, frankly, you know, but, you know, it was. I thought it was important to get to ultimately a sustainable energy future. And even if you discount the environmental situation, eventually we will run out of oil.
7:59Elon MuskYou know, it's a finite resource. You know, you can't recycle oil. It's not a recyclable thing. It's going to a lower energy state. So my original interest in electric cars, which goes back to almost high school, was really From a physics standpoint, we have to have something that is long term sustainable.
8:20Elon MuskFrom an economic standpoint, I thought this before of the environmental consequences of became more serious.
8:28ModeratorWhat's the problem we have in the minister here.
8:30Herbert Diess (VW)So I think, I think this, this evening is very important because you now see electric cars really competitive. No winning. Winning the. I would say an open competition which shows that it's feasible.
8:44Herbert Diess (VW)And Tesla is. That's why Tesla I think is very important for us because Elon is demonstrating that it works. No, it was customers. They like the cars also the surely loves the cars.
8:55Herbert Diess (VW)The performance of the cars. It's fun. It's not something where we should be fearful. Also electric mobility is great fun. It's great style. No, it's cool. The cars becoming really not less emotional.
9:09Herbert Diess (VW)I think cars becoming more emotional is what is coming. And I think we also, we are. I'm happy that Elon is pulling us, but I think the German industry is really now strongly investing and we will keep you alert.
9:29ModeratorOkay.
9:30Elon MuskI think Germany makes great cars for sure. You know, really some of the best cars in the world obviously are made in Germany. Everyone knows that German engineering is outstanding for sure.
9:42Elon MuskAnd you know, that's part of the reason why we are locating our gigafactory Europe in Germany. But we're also going to create an engineering and design center in Berlin because I think Berlin has some of the best art in the world.
9:57ModeratorAnd you can, can you tell us a little bit more about the factory where it is? Exactly something.
10:06Elon MuskYou know, there's not enough time tonight to tell all the details.
10:10ModeratorI think it's the right time.
10:13Elon MuskBut it's in the Berlin area and it's near the new airport.
10:19ModeratorOkay.
10:20Elon MuskYeah.
10:21ModeratorYes. Okay.
10:22Elon MuskAnd it's easy.
10:25ModeratorMaybe you are faster than the airport. Maybe I didn't ask.
10:29Elon MuskI was worried about that actually when people. I was like, we definitely need to move faster than the airport. That's for sure. Okay, but one easy question.
10:38ModeratorWhat is your private family car? And what is your private family car today in the. When you drive with your five children to the cinema or to the Pizza
10:46Herbert Diess (VW)Hut,
10:49Elon Muskbecause my kids are big these days, I'll drive Model X.
10:52ModeratorOkay.
10:53Elon MuskBut my daily driver is usually a Model S. Okay.
10:56ModeratorNo other car? No. From the competitors? No. No other car. Competitive?
11:01Elon MuskNo, I, I only own two. I own a more Ford Model T and a 1967 Series 1 Jaguar E type.
11:10ModeratorOkay. And what is your private car today? It's the ID or not.
11:16Herbert Diess (VW)I'm still in between. No, I'm driving ID already since few days. But my private car is still a Golf gti, which I love. I think one of the best cars in the world.
11:28Herbert Diess (VW)And in Wojsburg I'm driving a up electric, which is also fun to drive and accessible. But soon I will change.
11:37ModeratorOkay. Thank you both. Nice to have you here. Thank you.
11:42HostI take the microphone back. Thank you very much.
11:49HostThen we are coming to the NFL.
