When will Starship demonstrate orbital refilling?

Q10621 answers2014-2025
Short answer

Orbital refilling of rockets has never been done; he hoped to demonstrate it next year (2026). Captions split 'next' and 'year' around applause.

From his 2025-05 answer in SpaceX Starship Update (Starbase, May 29, 2025). Summary is ours; see the quotes below.

With physics we know today, the building blocks are there: a densified methalox rocket with on-orbit refueling, a Mars colonial fleet built up between Earth-Mars synchronizations every 26 months, then the fleet departs at the optimal transfer.

Orbital refilling is critical for high payload to Moon or Mars: Starship-to-Starship first, later dedicated tankers.

Orbital refilling is vital; more likely spacecraft-to-spacecraft like aerial refueling than a dedicated depot at first.
"Orbital refilling is vital to humanity’s future in space. More likely spacecraft to spacecraft (as aircraft do aerial refueling), than a dedicated depot, at least at first."

Optimistically toward the end of the next year (2020); he would be surprised if it took longer than two years.

Starship can go Mars surface to Earth surface by itself, but needs a massive booster plus orbital refilling to get to Mars.
"What’s amazing is how non-linear the effect of gravity is. Starship can travel by itself from surface of Mars to surface of Earth, but requires massive booster on Earth with orbital refilling to get to Mars, which is ~38% of Earth gravity."

No, apart from orbital refilling, which he thinks is very important. Besides a fully and rapidly reusable rocket you need orbital refilling; that is fundamental.

Docking with station is very hard; orbital refilling should in theory be easier because Starships dock with themselves and the first flights will be uncrewed.
"SpaceX has a lot of experience berthing & now docking with @Space_Station, which is very difficult. Orbital refilling should in theory be easier, since Starships dock with themselves & will be uncrewed at first."

In 2021 he said they did not need orbital refueling until going to the Moon or Mars, so they would get to orbit and back first and punt refueling later.
"We don't need orbital refueling. Unless you're going to the Moon, you need orbital refueling. Going to Mars, you need orbital refueling. Delivering satellites to Earth orbit, you do not need orbital refueling."

Starship with orbital refilling and dedicated deep-space variants would take payload capability up orders of magnitude versus Falcon Heavy.
"We could stretch the Falcon Heavy upper stage & increase this a lot, but FH already covers all known payloads. Starship, especially with orbital refilling & dedicated deep space variants (no heatshield, flaps or header tanks) will take this up orders of magnitude."

Orbital refilling (Starships docking and transferring propellant) was hoped for by the end of 2024, and certainly by the next year, as a technology needed for a Mars city and a Moon base.

Same day as the JRE 'default plan' Mars window, he said full Starship reusability had a good chance in 2025, and full immediate reflight plus orbital refilling would probably happen the next year (2026).
"There is a good chance of achieving full reusability of Starship this year. Full and immediate reflight of Starship, along with orbital refilling, probably happens next year. This is the fundamental breakthrough needed to make life multiplanetary."
