We’re taking great care to ensure that Optimus can easily be powered down locally with a physical switch to reduce the risk of centralized control."
He says Optimus must have a hard-coded local cutoff that no internet update can change.
"No amount of updates from the Internet can change that. So we'll make sure that Optimus is quite easy to shut down."
He says Optimus at scale needs a hard-coded way to turn it off.
"we definitely need to be very careful with Optimus at scale once it's in production, that you have a hard coded way to turn off Optimus."
He says anyone will be able to shut Optimus off locally, and that this cannot be changed by a software update.
"So basically anyone will be able to shut it off locally and you can't change that. Even if you like a software update, you can't change that. It has to be hard coded."
He says Tesla will put a lot of effort into localized control of the humanoid robot to avoid a Terminator outcome.
"we do not create some variant of the Terminator outcome. So we're going to put a lot of effort into localized control of the humanoid robot."
A humanoid can chase you anywhere, so there should be a hardwired local cutoff you cannot update from the internet — a local off switch that puts the robot into a safe state.
"we should have some kind of hardwired local cutoff that you can't update from the Internet"
He says he would be more reticent about Optimus without meaningful influence over how it is deployed.
"I'd be more reticent with respect to Optimus."
