Unsupervised self-driving: then vs now
Proposition (held fixed): When will Tesla cars drive on public roads with no human supervising, as robotaxis or unsupervised FSD, at scale? Not mixed with supervised FSD releases, safety statistics, Cybercab production or the Semi.
The million-robotaxi year moved from 2020 to “the end of this year”, 2026.
“But next year for sure, we will have over a million robotaxis on the road.”
“we already have some uh vehicles operating with no people inside and no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be uh widespread in the US um by the end of this year”
Apr 2022: “I actually am confident that we will solve it this year” 6 Apr 2022 · TED (Chris Anderson) · 12:19
May 2025: “hundreds of thousands, if not over a million Teslas doing self driving in the US” by “the end of next year” 20 May 2025 · CNBC (David Faber) · 2:03

Then
22 April 2019, Tesla Autonomy Day. Musk on robotaxis:
“I feel very confident predicting autonomous robotaxis for Tesla next year.”
“But I'm confident we'll have at least regulatory approval somewhere literally next year.”
“But next year for sure, we will have over a million robotaxis on the road.”
Editorial calendar reading: from April 2019, “next year” = 2020.
Earlier context, a different and longer-range proposition (share of new cars):
“if you say of new cars produced, I will be surprised if a majority of them are not self-driving in let's say 10 to 15 years.”
Restatements
28 December 2021, asked when Tesla will solve level four FSD:
“you think Tesla will solve level four FSD I mean it's looking quite likely that it will be next year”
6 April 2022, TED:
“admittedly these may be infamous last words, but I actually am confident that we will solve it this year.”
“it” = full self-driving, defined in the same answer as exceeding the accident probability of the average person.
Late 2024 to early 2025 on X:
“Not Teslas, once unsupervised FSD starts to happen next year”
“Unsupervised full self-driving begins”
The 29 Jan 2025 post is a three-word headline; this page does not read it as a dated deployment claim.
Midpoint: May 2025
20 May 2025, two interviews on the same day:
“we'll be launching unsupervised autonomy, basically self-driving cars with no one in them in Austin next month.”
“My prediction is that probably by the end of next year, we'll have probably hundreds of thousands, if not over a million Teslas doing self driving in the US”
Editorial calendar reading: “next month” = June 2025; “end of next year” = end of 2026. The CNBC answer goes on to call this “Level 4, unsupervised full self driving”.
“For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents.”
Now: 2026
“Roughly 10 billion miles of training data is needed to achieve safe unsupervised self-driving. Reality has a super long tail of complexity.”
“Just started Tesla Robotaxi drives in Austin with no safety monitor in the car.”
22 January 2026, World Economic Forum, answering about Tesla’s robotaxi service:
“will uh [it] be very very widespread by the end of this year within the US.”
Captions read “will uh I be”; the subject is shown as “[it]” in brackets. Context: the robotaxi service rolled out “in a few cities”.
18 May 2026, Tel Aviv:
“we already have some uh vehicles operating with no people inside and no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be uh widespread in the US um by the end of this year”
22 July 2026, Tesla Q2 2026 earnings call:
“So we'll continue to scale, I think very, very rapidly with it looks like more than 10% a week in terms of miles driven.”

What changed
| Item | Then (2019–2022) | Now (2025–2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Target year | “next year” (2020); “next year” (2022); “this year” (2022) | “end of next year” (2026, from May 2025); “end of this year” (2026) |
| Scale | “over a million robotaxis on the road” | “hundreds of thousands, if not over a million”; “widespread in the US” |
| Status cited | Hardware said to be ready; software pending | Austin rides with “no safety monitor”; “three cities in Texas” |
| Caveats | “not in all jurisdictions” | “Reality has a super long tail of complexity.” |
The year attached to large-scale unsupervised driving moved from 2020 to 2026 across these statements. The 2026 target is still open as of 23 Oct 2026.
What did not change
- The end state: cars with no one supervising, turned on by software across the fleet.
- The scale language: “over a million” in 2019; “if not over a million” in 2025.
- The horizon: each target sat about a year after the statement.
Neutral conclusion
On the same proposition, Musk’s dated target moved from 2020 (Apr 2019) to 2022 (Dec 2021, Apr 2022) to end of 2026 (May 2025, Jan and May 2026). By 2026 his own posts describe a smaller, real deployment: Austin rides with no safety monitor and vehicles in three Texas cities. Whether it is “widespread in the US” by end of 2026 is not yet decidable. This compares dated wording; it makes no claim about motives.
