Starship full reuse and ship catch: then vs now

Proposition (held fixed): When will SpaceX catch the Starship upper stage with the tower and refly it, making Starship fully reusable, and when will orbital refilling happen? Not mixed with Mars dates (see the Mars page), payload numbers or launch-rate goals.

Then: 2024

26 April 2024, replying on X:

“Full & rapid reusability of booster & ship and orbital refilling of ship are the 2 fundamental technologies we aim to solve by the end of next year.”

Editorial calendar reading: from April 2024, “the end of next year” = end of 2025.

20 November 2024, after a ship ocean landing:

“We will do one more ocean landing of the ship. If that goes well, then SpaceX will attempt to catch the ship with the tower.”

Restatements: 2025

28 February 2025, one post:

“There is a good chance of achieving full reusability of Starship this year.”
“Full and immediate reflight of Starship, along with orbital refilling, probably happens next year.”

29 May 2025, Starship Update at Starbase:

“version three of Starship which we're aiming to launch for the first time at the end of this year.”
“Starship catch is probably flight 13 to 15, depending on how well V3 flights go”
“SpaceX will do orbital refilling several times next year with Starship V3.”

Now: 2026

“Should note that SpaceX will only try to catch the ship with the tower after two perfect soft landings in the ocean.”
“Unless we discover problems after mission data review, SpaceX will attempt to catch the ship with the tower on next flight”

4 August 2026, SpaceX Q2 2026 earnings call:

“attempt to uh catch the ship with the tower on the next flight which is tenatively scheduled for the end of this month.”
“Looks like we will probably catch the ship with the tower in a few months.”
“First reflight of the ship will be either end of this year or early next.”

15 September 2026, All-In Podcast:

“So, if this flight goes well, then on flight 15, we will try to catch the ship.”
“then either end of this year or but more likely early next, we will refly the ship and refly the booster.”

Captions spell tentatively as tenatively; the quote is kept as captioned.

What did not change

Neutral conclusion

In April 2024 Musk aimed to solve full reuse and orbital refilling by the end of 2025. In February 2025 he gave full reuse a good chance that year and refilling the next. Ship-catch targets then moved from flight 13 to 15 (Aug 2025) to the next flight (Jul–Aug 2026) to flight 15 (Sep 2026), with first ship reflight more likely early 2027. Outcome still open as of 23 Oct 2026. This compares dated wording; it makes no claim about motives.
