Then: 2017

6 June 2017, Tesla shareholder meeting, before the unveil:

“I'm guessing that we, we probably reach scale production on the semi in about two years, maybe 18 months, but probably about two years”

16 November 2017, Semi unveil:

“And production begins 2019”

Delays and preconditions: 2019 to 2021

“We’ve been so mired in production & logistics for past 18 months. Really looking fwd to getting Semi into production.”
“This affects long-term production, especially Semi, Cybertruck & Roadster, but what we announce will not reach serious high-volume production until 2022.”

The September 2020 post is about Battery Day technology, which he says “affects long-term production, especially Semi”.

“Demand is no problem, but near-term cell supply makes it hard to scale Semi. This limitation will be less onerous next year.”

First deliveries: 2022

7 April 2022, Cyber Rodeo:

“Next year will be a production with the Roadster and with semi”
“Tesla 500 mile range Semi Truck starts shipping this year, Cybertruck next year”
“Excited to announce start of production of Tesla Semi Truck with deliveries to @Pepsi on Dec 1st!”

What did not change

Neutral conclusion

On the same proposition, the year Musk gave for Semi production at scale moved from 2019 (2017) to 2022 (2020–2021) to 2026 (2025–2026). Low-volume builds and Pepsi deliveries began in late 2022. On the Q3 2026 call he said production of the Semi truck began in Q3 2026. Whether 2026 reaches “high volume” is not yet decidable as of 23 Oct 2026. This compares dated wording; it makes no claim about motives.
