Then

9 March 2020, SATELLITE 2020, on Starlink and telcos:

“will effectively serve the I don't know three or four percent hardest to reach customers”

Counts along the way

“Starlink simultaneously active users just exceeded the strategically important threshold of 69,420 last night!”
“Over 250k Starlink user terminals”

4 April 2024:

“Almost 3 million customers.”
“passing 3 million customers in 99 countries! And thanks to you for buying @Starlink!”
“Starlink now at 10 million active users”

Now

8 June 2026, SpaceX technical talk:

“ultimately we think there's probably going to be a few hundred million Starlink terminals out there.”

11 August 2026, SpaceX company update:

“we're now in 167 countries, 22 million mobile subscribers, 13 million high bandwidth subscribers, and like I said, expect these numbers to increase by more than a factor of 10 over time and long term.”
“I think it'll probably do a majority of the Internet, in fact, I think might end up doing over 90% of all Internet traffic on Starlink.”

Counts are Musk’s own figures as stated; “active users”, “customers”, “terminals” and “subscribers” are different measures and are not merged here.

What did not change

Neutral conclusion

Unlike the date-slip pages in this series, Starlink’s stated scope widened. In March 2020 Musk described Starlink as serving the three or four percent hardest-to-reach telco customers. The counts he posted rose from 69,420 simultaneous users (Jun 2021) to 3 million customers (May 2024) and 10 million active users (Feb 2026); in Aug 2026 he cited 22 million mobile and 13 million high-bandwidth subscribers and said Starlink might end up carrying over 90% of internet traffic. The long-term ceiling is a forecast, not yet decidable as of 23 Oct 2026. This compares dated wording; it makes no claim about motives.
