Proposition (held fixed): When would Tesla put unsupervised Full Self-Driving on the road, and would that include a million robotaxis by the end of 2020? The later Austin launch dates are on the Robotaxi launch page. The 2017 LA-to-New York demo is on its own page.
What did not change: unsupervised driving as the goal · Tesla’s own cars as the fleet · a city rollout before a national one. ElonsFAQ corpus · verified 2026-10-23 · unofficial.
Editorial calendar reading: about two years from Jan 2016 = around 2018. The later, more specific LA-to-New York demonstration is on the 2017 demo page.
22 April 2019, Tesla Autonomy Day:
“I feel very confident predicting autonomous robotaxis for Tesla next year.”
Editorial calendar reading: “next year” from Apr 2019 = 2020.
8 July 2019, on X:
“This is why it’s possible for Tesla to have a million robotaxis by end of 2020 if we upgrade existing HW2 fleet of ~500k & make at least ~500k FSD cars”
“we already have some uh vehicles operating with no people inside and no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be uh widespread in the US um by the end of this year”
Company figures, not Elon quotes (Tesla Q3 2026 Update · Single source for these numbers): 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions. Tesla’s footnote: “Active driver supervision required; does not make the vehicle autonomous.” “We started providing Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs on September 3 in Austin.” “We reached nearly two million cumulative unsupervised miles for our Robotaxi service as of the end of the quarter.”
What changed
Item
Then (2016–2019)
Now (2025–2026)
Unsupervised cars
autonomous robotaxis “next year” (2019); Summon anywhere by land in “~2 years” (2016)
Robotaxi in Austin with no safety monitor (Jan 2026); some vehicles with no people inside in three Texas cities (May 2026)
How many
“over a million robotaxis on the road” next year; “a million robotaxis by end of 2020”
Unsupervised miles in Tesla’s own Robotaxi service; 1.74 million paid FSD subscriptions still labeled supervised (company, Q3 2026)
Where
a coast-to-coast Summon example (LA and NY)
Austin first, then three cities in Texas; FSD (Supervised) for owners
What did not change
The product: Tesla cars driving with no one at the wheel, as a paid service.
The path: software on the existing fleet, then a dedicated robotaxi.
Neutral conclusion
In 2019 Elon said Tesla would have autonomous robotaxis the next year and, “for sure”, over a million of them on the road, and on X that a million by the end of 2020 was possible if the HW2 fleet was upgraded. That 2020 count did not arrive. Unsupervised driving did arrive later, in Tesla’s Robotaxi service: Elon said in May 2025 it would start in Austin the next month, and in Jan 2026 that drives there had begun with no safety monitor in the car. In May 2026 he said some vehicles were already operating with no people inside in three Texas cities. Tesla’s Q3 2026 update (company) puts Cybercab Robotaxi rides from 3 Sep 2026, nearly two million unsupervised Robotaxi miles, and 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions that still require a driver. This compares dated wording; it makes no claim about motives.
